To receive us back to the topic at hand, though seeking as a result of my notes to the rimfire WP, I discovered the Winchester letter from C.E. Blizard dated June five, 1941 which states that “all barrels in assembled guns excepting .
Determined by what I have observed and browse in other resources, the oval (P) evidence mark was not introduced until eventually 1908. Just before that point, Winchester marked “OF” (outside the house fitted) on the bottom of the barrel under the forend inventory with the mail get barrels. I have see quite a few of these on Model 1885 Solitary Shot Rifles that predate 1908.
Though there are some plausible theories presented listed here and elsewhere we may in no way know the answer to the first concern in regards to the receiver with equally marks proven inside a previous article. Based upon other substitute barrels I've observed which consist of both of those the WP and mail purchase P and a press release from a previous Winchester employee that indicated they DID use some mail buy parts when rebarreling rifles returned for services I believe that it's a substitute receiver which was mounted and proofed at Winchester as well as the mail buy proof was also additional to easily indicate it was not the first receiver. Which is just my feeling/guess. Hope that helps.
